Name the failure in one sentence
Write what happened as a sentence a stranger could test: "On the contact page, the Send button does nothing since the plugin update on Tuesday", or "Orders-request emails stopped arriving two weeks ago". Add the page address, when it last worked and what changed. That sentence decides which kind of help you need and is the most useful thing you can send anyone.
- A page that shows an error or goes blank: the critical-error job.
- One thing on a working page that fails: the conflict job.
- Email missing from a form: the form sending job.
- Posts or tasks that run late: the scheduler job.
Do the free checks first
Several checks cost nothing and take minutes. Look in the spam folder and any quarantine page for missing form emails. Open the page in a private window and a second browser. Note which plugins updated recently. Ask your host whether they changed the PHP version. Ask whether a staging copy or a backup exists. Each answer narrows the problem and tells a helper what is safe to attempt.
- Never send passwords, recovery links or customer data to anyone in a first message.
- Do not run updates on the live site while it is broken.
Know what a bounded job promises
A bounded job here names one result, a price, what is excluded, the checks that will prove it and how it is undone. It is done on a copy of your site, and your own site holder applies the change live. The jobs are new services with untested prices, and payment follows the agreed checks and your sign-off. If your problem is bigger than the job, you are told, and nothing is charged.
- Ask for the acceptance checks in writing before you agree.
- Ask who applies the fix to the live site.
When recurring care is better than a one-off
If the same kind of problem keeps returning, a standing service may fit: updates tried on staging first (published test price GBP 145 a month for up to twenty updates) or forms tested monthly (GBP 95 a month). Neither includes backups, monitoring or applying changes live. Prices are untested proposals.
- Choose standing care when the cost of a surprise is higher than the monthly fee.
