Job membership-members-only-area-with-builder-tools · revised 11 October 2026

Set up a members-only area using your Wix or Squarespace site's own membership tools

A members-only area on Wix or Squarespace where signed-in members see up to five protected pages and logged-out visitors do not, using the builder's own membership tools.

You might be seeing

  • Private pages are reachable by anyone who has the address
  • Members have to be told a shared password, or documents are emailed one by one
  • You started a members area but the sign-up, access rules or pricing plans were never finished

No passwords, keys, card details or admin invites needed to start.

What usually happened

Each builder has its own membership tool with its own rules about what a protected page is, who counts as a member, what a plan can contain and what the tool cannot do. A members area built without those rules can leave a page public after a move, hide pages from paying members, or promise a level of secrecy that the tool does not give.

Who it’s for: Owner of a Wix or Squarespace site who wants clients, students or subscribers to see some pages that the public cannot.

Usually starts when: You have guides, recordings or client documents that are currently public or sent by email, and you want one place that only chosen people can open.

The result: Signed-in members with the right plan or role can open up to five protected pages, and a logged-out visitor and a signed-in non-member cannot, shown by a test with three test accounts.

Which builder is the site on?
Do you need to bring in an existing list of members with their current plans?
Will members pay for access?
Would it matter commercially or legally if a member shared a page with someone else?

Checks you can run yourself

  1. List pages and groups

Write each page you want to protect on one line and next to it the group of people who should open it, such as all members, paid members or a named client group.

Look for: If every page maps to one or two groups, the builder's own tools usually suffice. Many groups or per-person pages need a different tool.

What you get

  • The configured members area and protected pages, ready for you to publish
  • An access matrix showing who can open which page, tested
  • A short guide to adding, removing and changing a member

Included

  • One Wix or Squarespace site: the members area, sign-up and login pages, and up to five protected pages
  • Up to two access levels set up with the builder's own roles, plans or member sites, as you decide
  • Test accounts for a member, a non-member and a logged-out visitor, with the results recorded
  • A written list of what the builder's membership tool cannot do for your case

Not included

  • Taking payments: the payment account and live charges stay with your account holder, and a live payment test is yours
  • Importing an existing member list where the builder does not allow it
  • Content writing, course design or video hosting
  • Any promise that members cannot copy or share what they have been shown

How we know it’s done

Agreed with you before work starts. Each check produces evidence you keep.

  1. Each protected page address, opened in a private window while logged out, does not show the protected content.

Evidence: A screenshot for each of up to five addresses.

  2. A test member with the right access level can open every page that level is meant to see.

Evidence: Screenshots or a screen recording of that test member opening each page.

  3. A signed-in test account without that level cannot open the restricted pages.

Evidence: The access matrix with the result of each test account on each page.

  4. After the test member's access is removed, the restricted pages are closed to that account again.

Evidence: A second test result after removal, kept in the matrix.

Sign-off. You log in with a test member and a non-member, open every protected address and sign off before payment. Your account holder publishes.

If it fails. If the agreed checks fail, you do not pay for this fixed scope. We hand over the findings and agree whether to stop or re-quote; no surprise work.

When it fits, and when we stop

It fits when

  • The site is on Wix or Squarespace, on a plan that supports the membership feature you choose
  • You decide who gets in and which pages each group sees, in a simple list
  • The protected pages' content already exists or is supplied before we start

We stop and tell you if

  • You need to import existing members into Squarespace, which it does not allow, or per-member personalised dashboards beyond the builder's tools
  • The content needs a guarantee of secrecy, which a builder tool cannot give
  • The site is on Webflow, whose own user accounts feature was shut down in January 2026

What could go wrong

Each protected page can be moved back out of the members area, and the handover lists every page and setting changed. Note that on Squarespace a page moved out of a member site becomes public at once.

Scroll the table sideways to read it all.

RiskHow we handle it
A protected page becomes public if a member site is deleted or a page is moved out.Squarespace says a deleted member site or a moved page becomes unrestricted; the guide names this, and the acceptance test is repeated after any move.
Members share content they were shown. We say plainly that no builder tool prevents sharing; this is not a secrecy guarantee.
Test accounts remain active after the work. The handover lists every test account and removing them is part of sign-off.

An independent reviewer checks the redacted before and after evidence, the list of changes and the way back, and looks separately at anything that touches customer data, payments or logins, before you see the result.

How we deliver

We arrange the work and independent review, then show you the result against the agreed checks. You keep authority over your systems.

  • Agree the pages, groups, free or paid access and the builder in writing
  • Add the members area or member site and the access levels, keeping new pages unpublished or disabled until sign-off where the builder allows it
  • Place each protected page under its access rule and write the sign-up and login pages
  • Test with a member, a non-member and a logged-out visitor, and record the results
  • Have a separate reviewer open every protected address with the three accounts
  • Hand over the build, the matrix and the management guide; your account holder publishes

This is a one-off job, not emergency cover or a subscription. We confirm eligibility, the total price, a start window and a delivery date before you accept. Work starts only after agreed inputs, secure access and necessary permissions are in place. Builder plan, app, domain and payment-provider charges are yours and are excluded unless the written quote includes them. No charge or booking is created by an enquiry.

Need to keep it working?

If you later outgrow the builder's tools, ask for a quote for a different membership set-up. A monthly forms and integrations check is a separate service.

Ongoing work is separately scoped and quoted: no monitoring, response-time guarantee or automatic subscription is included in this job.

Explore an ongoing engineering lane, or mention the responsibility you need in your enquiry.

What you can check

This is a new service. We have not delivered this job for a client yet.

Other ways to get this done

  • If you only need a single private page for a few people, a page password or an unlisted address may be enough, though neither is true member access.
  • On Webflow, which no longer has its own members feature, a third-party membership service is a different build with its own rules.

Questions

Can members be stopped from sharing what they see?

No. Once someone can see a page, no builder tool can stop them copying or sharing it. Squarespace says as much in its own help.

Will search engines see the members-only pages?

Squarespace leaves member pages out of its sitemap and turns off their SEO settings. Public pages that advertise the area can still be found.

Do you take the payments?

No. Your authorised account holder owns the payment account and carries out any live payment test.

Send an enquiry

Send us

  • The builder and the plan you are on, as shown in your own account
  • A list of the pages to protect and the groups of people who should see them
  • Whether members pay, and what you want to happen when someone stops paying

Later, once you agree

  • Builder access at the role named in the access section, set up by you and removable at any time
  • The protected content (confidential material only after a secure handover route has been agreed with you), and the text for the sign-up and login pages
  • Three test email addresses you control

You keep the live site, the builder account, the domain and all customer data. Access is agreed with you in writing before any work starts, and no work starts until it is. Any access we use is through a company-controlled account, never a personal login. The role depends on the builder. Squarespace: the Administrator permission; Squarespace says an Administrator or a Website editor can create a member site, but its permissions table gives adding pages, editing page settings and design changes to owners and administrators only. Wix: the Website Manager role; Wix's pages do not say which role can add a Members Area, so we confirm that in your dashboard before quoting. We do not open, export or copy your existing members or contacts; the tests use the three test accounts. We name the exact role and any seat or plan charge in the quote before you invite anyone; those charges are yours. You can remove our access at any time. No passwords or payment details go by ordinary email, and your authorised account holder publishes the final change.

A public HTTPS link only, without login details, query strings or fragments. No code or logs.
