Job nextjs-vercel-build-fails · revised 9 October 2026
Fix a Next.js build that works locally but fails on Vercel
The same commit builds on a Vercel preview and its named page loads there without introducing a secret into source control.
You might be seeing
- Vercel marks a deploy as failed while local development still opens
- The build log names an environment variable, prerendered route, dependency or build cache
No passwords, keys, card details or admin invites needed to start.
What usually happened
The deployment environment differs from the owner’s local machine in settings, dependencies or build-time data, so the new Next.js version never reaches a Vercel preview even when local development runs.
Who it’s for: Owner of a Next.js site whose last code change does not deploy.
Usually starts when: A local build appears green but Vercel rejects a production or preview deployment.
The result: The same commit builds on a Vercel preview and its named page loads there without introducing a secret into source control.
Check whether this job fits
Answer these without sending logins or customer data. Nothing is submitted unless you choose to contact us.
Checks you can run yourself
Compare the two builds
Run your project’s production build locally and open the Vercel deployment log for the same commit.
Look for: Note the first error line in each and the Node version; strip environment values.
What you get
- Build fix or exact project-setting instructions with diff
- Redacted failed and passing build receipts plus rollback instructions
Included
- Diagnose one failing deployment for an existing Next.js repo
- Fix the smallest code or Vercel project-setting mismatch and rerun the build
Not included
- A redesign or new feature
- Migrating to another host
- Repairing a production database or third-party outage
- Guaranteed performance or a whole-app security audit
How we know it’s done
Agreed with you before work starts. Each check produces evidence you keep.
Vercel preview for the agreed commit reports a successful production build and the named route renders expected content
Evidence: Deployment URL, commit ID and redacted build log
Local production build still passes and the repo diff contains no environment values or credentials
Evidence: Command exit and reviewed diff
Sign-off. You inspect the named test result and sign off before payment. Your authorised account holder performs and verifies any live change.
If it fails. If the agreed test fails, you do not pay for this fixed scope. We hand over the findings and agree whether to stop or re-quote; no surprise work.
When it fits, and when we stop
It fits when
- A reproducible failed Vercel deployment and the matching source commit exist
- Owner can create a Vercel preview and change project settings
We stop and tell you if
- The error only occurs after runtime login with real customer data
- The repo is incomplete or third-party access/paid service is blocked
What could go wrong
Keep the previous code or configuration on a named test copy. The handover lists every change and its reverse; live database changes or external effects require a separate owner-approved plan.
Scroll the table sideways to read it all.
| Risk | How we handle it |
|---|---|
| A missing secret is committed to make the build pass | Owner enters test value in Vercel settings; reviewer inspects diff before deploy. |
| Preview passes but production uses a different environment | Owner checks matching settings and performs the final production deploy under their account. |
An independent reviewer checks the specific data, payment and permission risks, the redacted test result and whether the owner can safely reverse the change.
How we deliver
We arrange the work and independent review, then show you the result against the agreed checks. You keep authority over your systems.
- Reproduce failed Vercel build for the agreed commit without copying live secrets
- Isolate Node, dependency, environment, cache or prerender mismatch and make one bounded change
- Build the same commit locally and in preview; second reviewer checks build log and change
- Hand over the reviewed change, evidence and reversal steps; the owner controls the live switch.
This is a one-off job, not emergency cover or a subscription. We confirm eligibility, the total price, a start window and a delivery date before you accept. Work starts only after agreed inputs, secure access, any licences and necessary permissions are in place. Hosting, platform and supplier charges are excluded unless the written quote includes them. No charge or booking is created by an enquiry.
Need to keep it working?
If deployments break repeatedly, discuss keeping the build checked against dependency and environment changes.
Ongoing work is separately scoped and quoted: no monitoring, response-time guarantee or automatic subscription is included in this job.
Explore an ongoing engineering lane, or mention the responsibility you need in your enquiry.
What you can check
This is a new service. We have not delivered this job for a client yet.
Other ways to get this done
- Ask the original platform or app vendor whether its support can fix this under your existing plan.
- If someone already maintains this system for you, ask them to test this exact failure on a copy first.
Questions
What if dev mode works but npm run build fails?
Send that error. It may still be a bounded build repair, but it is not the Vercel-only case described here.
Will you change my production deployment?
No. We verify preview; your account holder promotes the reviewed commit.
Start with an email
Send us
- Redacted build error, framework preset and failing commit
- Whether local production build succeeds, not only dev mode
Later, once you agree
- Client-controlled code export or company-owned read-only repo route
- Preview project and owner-entered test environment variables
- A company-controlled secure handoff agreed before access: no live passwords, keys, private code or customer records by ordinary email.
You keep the live service, account, production keys and customer records. Agents work only on an authorised copy with synthetic data and a company-controlled handoff; a person owns Synthetic Industry and remains accountable. Your authorised account holder approves and carries out the live change.
