Fix campaign link tagging so paid, email and social land in the right GA4 channel

Your live campaign links use one naming rule, and each tested link pattern appears in GA4 with the agreed source, medium, campaign and channel.

You might be seeing

  • Campaign names such as Spring_Sale and springsale appear as separate rows
  • A large share of sessions is reported as Unassigned or has (not set) for campaign

No passwords, keys, card details or admin invites needed to start.

What usually happened

Campaign links carry inconsistent or missing UTM values. GA4 treats parameter values as case sensitive, assigns the default channel group by fixed rules on source and medium, and files traffic that matches no rule under Unassigned. The report is wrong because the links are wrong, not because GA4 is broken.

Who it’s for: A marketer or agency whose GA4 traffic report shows (not set), Unassigned or the same campaign split across spellings.

Usually starts when: Email, paid or social visits are reported under Unassigned, Direct or several near-identical campaign names.

The result: Up to 20 live campaign link patterns follow one written naming rule, and a test link for each pattern, carrying a unique test campaign value, shows the agreed source, medium and campaign in GA4 reports and falls into the agreed default or custom channel.

Checks you can run yourself

  1. Check the case split

In Traffic acquisition, switch the dimension to session campaign and sort alphabetically.

Look for: Rows that differ only in capital letters or separators are one campaign written two ways.

What you get

  • A naming convention sheet: allowed values, case rule and an example for each channel
  • The corrected example link for each of up to 20 patterns, with the old and new tagged address
  • A test table showing each tested link pattern, the unique test campaign value used, the expected source, medium and channel, and what GA4 reported

Included

  • Up to 20 live campaign link patterns across email, paid and social, reviewed against one written naming convention. A pattern is one distinct combination of source, medium and campaign-naming style, such as the monthly newsletter
  • A corrected example link for each pattern and a naming sheet your team can reuse, so every other link of a pattern follows the same rule
  • If a rule gap remains, one custom channel group within the limit Google allows for a standard property
  • A test link for each pattern with a unique test campaign value, and a check in GA4 reports after Google has processed the data. Patterns that rely on Google Ads auto-tagging are checked by reading the link, not by a test visit

Not included

  • Rewriting history: past sessions keep the values they were recorded with
  • Changing the Google Ads auto-tagging setting, or overriding it in GA4, which Google says takes priority over manual tagging
  • Clicking live Google Ads ads to test them: auto-tagged paid-search patterns are marked in the test table as read from the link, not visit-tested
  • Campaign strategy, budgets, creative or audience choices
  • Offline or QR campaigns that you cannot link to a trackable address
  • Any promise about ad performance, revenue or rankings

How we know it’s done

Agreed with you before work starts. Each check produces evidence you keep.

  1. Each tested link pattern, opened with its unique test campaign value in a new browser profile, loads the right landing page and carries the source, medium and campaign values exactly as written in the naming sheet. Realtime may confirm the visit but is not the pass condition: Google says its source card shows how a user was first acquired and only for established users.

Evidence: Screenshot of the address and the loaded page for each pattern, and the test table row for each pattern.

  2. After Google has processed the data, Traffic acquisition lists each test visit under its unique test campaign value (session campaign) with the agreed session source / medium, in the agreed default or custom channel and not under Unassigned.

Evidence: Report screenshots of session campaign, session source / medium and default channel group, filtered to the test values.

  3. Every pattern that relies on Google Ads auto-tagging is listed in the test table as read from the link, with the reason, and no pass is claimed for it from a synthetic visit.

Evidence: The test table rows for those patterns.

  4. No two corrected links write the same campaign with different capitalisation or separators.

Evidence: The sorted list of campaign values in the handover.

Sign-off. You review the naming sheet, the test table and the report check, sign off in writing and apply the rule yourself. Payment follows sign-off.

If it fails. If the test sessions do not appear as agreed, you do not pay for this fixed scope. If a destination cannot accept parameters, we explain it and stop or re-quote in writing.

When it fits, and when we stop

It fits when

  • You can list the live campaign links or the tools that generate them, and you can edit or ask for edits to those links
  • You have an account holder who can grant a scoped role on the GA4 property
  • GA4 already receives page views from the destination pages
  • A test browser can accept analytics cookies on the destination pages
  • No Active data filter on the property drops the test traffic: Google says excluded data is never processed, so we agree a different test device or method in writing before work starts if one does

We stop and tell you if

  • The links are generated by a third-party tool whose settings you cannot change
  • More than 20 distinct link patterns are in scope, which needs a quote
  • The destination pages strip query parameters through a redirect that cannot be changed

What could go wrong

Old and new links are listed side by side, so any link can be reverted. A custom channel group can be deleted or reordered without changing collected data.

Scroll the table sideways to read it all.

RiskHow we handle it
A corrected link breaks the landing page because the destination rejects the parameters. Each pattern is opened in a fresh session and must load the right page before it is accepted.
Reports show a break in the series when the naming changes. The handover records the change date so later comparisons can account for it.
Test visits add test campaign rows to real reports.Every test visit uses a recognisable test campaign value listed in the handover, so the rows can be told apart or filtered.

A separate reviewer opens a sample of the corrected links and checks the report rows against the naming sheet. Your marketing owner approves the rule and applies it to live campaigns.

How we deliver

We arrange the work and independent review, then show you the result against the agreed checks. You keep authority over your systems.

  • Agree the link list, the naming rule owner, the test marker and the access route in writing
  • Compare current values against the rule and group them by fault: case, missing field, wrong medium, redirect
  • Propose the naming rule and the corrected links for your approval
  • Open each corrected link pattern, with its unique test campaign value, in a new browser profile and read the address and the landing page; Realtime may be used for a quick sighting only
  • After Google has processed the data, read the Traffic acquisition report for each test value: session campaign, session source / medium and default channel group
  • Independent review, then hand over the sheet and corrected links

This is a one-off job, not a subscription or emergency cover. We confirm eligibility, the price, a start window and a delivery date before you accept. Work starts only after the agreed inputs and the least access the job needs are in place. Fees charged by Google, Meta, your host or any tool you use are not included. No charge or booking is created by an enquiry.

Need to keep it working?

A standing monthly check can re-test your live link patterns and report new (not set) rows.

Ongoing work is separately scoped and quoted: no monitoring, response-time guarantee or automatic subscription is included in this job.

Explore an ongoing engineering lane, or mention the responsibility you need in your enquiry.

What you can check

This is a new service. We have not delivered this job for a client yet.

Other ways to get this done

  • Google documents the UTM parameters, says source, medium and campaign should always be used, and that values are case sensitive. support.google.com
  • Google documents the default channel group rules, so you can check by hand where a source and medium pair would land. support.google.com

Questions

Can you fix last quarter's numbers?

No. Past sessions keep the values they were recorded with. A custom channel group can regroup reports, but it does not rewrite the recorded source or medium.

Why are my Google Ads clicks not using my UTM values?

Google documents that auto-tagging takes priority over manual tagging in GA4. Changing that setting is outside this job.

Why not just check Realtime?

Google says the Realtime source card shows how a user was first acquired and only for established users, so a browser you have used before can show an old source. We use Realtime only as a quick sighting and prove the result in the Traffic acquisition report with a unique test campaign value.

Send us

  • Five example campaign links you currently use, with any personal data removed
  • The report rows that look wrong: the campaign names as they appear
  • No logins and no customer lists.

Later, once you agree

  • A scoped Editor role on the GA4 property, granted to the identity we agree with you before work starts
  • The list of live links or the export from your email or social scheduling tool, grouped by pattern if you can
  • Your decision on the naming rule once we propose it

You own the website, the Google and Meta accounts, the tag manager container and all the data. We ask for the lowest role that lets us do the job. Before any work starts we agree with you in writing which identity receives that role; you grant it and can remove it at any time. We never ask for your passwords. You keep the right to publish: we prepare changes and you publish them.
