Job shopify-abandoned-checkout-emails-not-sending · revised 11 October 2026
Get Shopify abandoned checkout emails sending to the shoppers who qualify
Three test checkouts you run with your own email, each stopping before payment, give the expected result, a recovery email with a working link or none, and the settings behind them are written down.
You might be seeing
- The abandoned checkouts list shows entries but no reminder emails were sent
- Your own test checkout never produced a reminder
- Reminders reach some shoppers but not those who gave a phone number
- The recovery link in the email does not behave as expected
No passwords, keys, card details or admin invites needed to start.
What usually happened
Shopify counts a checkout as abandoned only after the shopper gave an email address and left it unfinished for over ten minutes, and it sends nothing if the checkout was completed, payment errored, the shop does not ship to the address, only a phone number was given, no product is available, everything is free or the payment was blocked as high risk. A switched-off automation, a recipient or delay setting that is not what you assumed, or a store channel that does not support recovery also stops the email.
Who it’s for: Owner of a Shopify store whose abandoned checkout reminder emails never arrive, arrive late or reach only some shoppers.
Usually starts when: You expected recovery emails after shoppers left checkout, but the abandoned checkout list shows no emails sent or no recoveries.
The result: Three agreed test checkouts you run with your own address, each stopping before payment, give the result the settings should produce, an email with a working recovery link or none, and the settings behind each result are written down.
Check whether this job fits
Four questions, about two minutes. Your answers stay on this page unless you choose to email them.
Checks you can run yourself
Read the automation settings
Open the messaging automations in your admin, find the abandoned checkout automation and open its settings.
Look for: Whether it is on, who it sends to, and how long after abandonment it sends.
Check a stuck checkout against the exceptions
Open one abandoned checkout and compare it with the list of cases where no email is sent.
Look for: A phone number instead of an email, a country you do not ship to, an unavailable product or a completed order.
What you get
- The test table: scenario, what you did, what arrived and when, expected result
- The settings to apply, field by field, and why
- Corrected template text if the template needs a change, ready to paste
- A note on whether any missing email is a store setting or a mail delivery problem
Included
- The abandoned checkout automation settings: switched on, who it sends to, how long after abandonment
- The reasons no email is sent and which apply to your checkouts
- Three test scenarios you run with your own email address, each stopping before payment and compared with the expected result
- Corrected notification template text if the email itself is broken or missing the recovery link
Not included
- Email authentication or spam placement, which is a separate job
- A test of a completed purchase: it needs a real order or Shopify's payment test mode, which stops customers placing live orders while it is on, so the fixed job relies on Shopify's published rule for that case
- Writing marketing campaigns or discount offers
- Consent, privacy or legal advice about marketing emails
- Point-of-sale or third-party channel checkouts, which are not recovered by this feature
- Business-to-business store activation, which Shopify Support controls
How we know it’s done
Agreed with you before work starts. Each check produces evidence you keep.
An eligible test checkout with your own email address produces one reminder after the configured delay, and its link opens that checkout
Evidence: Send and receive timestamps and the link opening, with details removed
A test checkout with only a phone number produces no reminder, matching the documented exception
Evidence: The inbox and abandoned checkout entries showing no email
A test checkout to an address you do not ship to produces no reminder, matching the documented exception
Evidence: Screenshot of the checkout and the empty inbox
The written settings match what the admin shows after you apply them
Evidence: A screenshot of the automation settings
Sign-off. You review the test table and sign off before payment. Applying the settings and running the re-test are steps you take under your own account.
If it fails. If the checks do not pass, you do not pay, and we hand over what we found so anyone can continue.
When it fits, and when we stop
It fits when
- The store sells through the online store channel
- You can run test checkouts with your own email address and a low-value test product, stopping before payment
- An authorised person can change notification and automation settings
- Emails from your store reach you for other notifications
We stop and tell you if
- The test emails are sent but land in spam; this job does not fix mail authentication
- Your store is a business-to-business store and the feature has not been activated by Shopify Support
- Most abandoned checkouts come from channels that are not recovered by this feature
- You want the offer or consent wording designed, which is a separate piece of work
What could go wrong
The handover lists each setting as it was and as it should be, and the original template text, so you can restore both. We do not change the live store.
Scroll the table sideways to read it all.
| Risk | How we handle it |
|---|---|
| A test checkout sends reminders to a real customer | Tests use only your own email address and a test product, and stop before payment. |
| Changing the recipient group emails shoppers who did not expect it | The handover states the effect of each recipient option and leaves the choice to you; we give no consent advice. |
| The recovery link is forwarded or reused | The handover repeats that anyone with the link can continue the checkout, so it should go only to the original shopper. |
A second reviewer checks that each expected result follows from the documented rules, that template text keeps the recovery link and that no customer data is in the handover.
How we deliver
We arrange the work and independent review, then show you the result against the agreed checks. You keep authority over your systems.
- Read the settings and list screenshots and note which exceptions could apply
- Write three test scenarios, each stopping before payment, with the expected result for each, agreed with you
- You run the scenarios with your own address, and send the timestamps and what arrived
- Compare each result with the expected one and find the setting or exception behind any difference
- Prepare the corrected settings and, if needed, template text, and have them independently reviewed
- Hand over the test table and instructions; you apply the changes and re-run the failing scenario
This is a one-off job, not emergency cover or a subscription. We confirm eligibility, the total price, a start window and a delivery date before you accept. Work starts only after agreed inputs, secure access, any licences and necessary permissions are in place. Platform, app and supplier charges are excluded unless the written quote includes them. No charge or booking is created by an enquiry.
Need to keep it working?
Discuss a recurring check of the recovery path after settings or theme changes as a separate agreement.
Ongoing work is separately scoped and quoted: no monitoring, response-time guarantee or automatic subscription is included in this job.
Explore an ongoing engineering lane, or mention the responsibility you need in your enquiry.
What you can check
This is a new service. We have not delivered this job for a client yet.
Other ways to get this done
- Shopify documents when a recovery email is and is not sent. Compare one abandoned checkout with that list before anything else.
- You can send the recovery link manually from an abandoned checkout, to the original customer only, as a stop-gap.
Questions
Do you need my Shopify login?
No. You run three test checkouts, each stopping before payment, and apply the settings; we interpret the results.
Do you test a completed purchase?
No. Shopify's payment test mode stops customers placing live orders while it is on, and a real order placed and refunded may carry fees from your payment processor. So the fixed job tests the three cases that stop before payment and relies on Shopify's published rule for completed purchases.
What if the test email lands in spam?
Then the store setting is working and the fault is mail delivery. We say so, and email authentication is a separate job.
Can you tell me who I am allowed to email?
No. That is a legal and consent question for you or your adviser. We only make the store do what you decide.
Send an enquiry
Send us
- A screenshot of the abandoned checkouts list with customer details removed
- The automation settings you see for recipients and delay
- Which sales channels most checkouts come from
- Whether your own test checkout produced anything and when
- Whether other store emails, such as order confirmations, reach you
Later, once you agree
- You run the three test checkouts with your own address, each stopping before payment, and send the timestamps and the email, or a screenshot of the inbox
- Redacted screenshots of the notification template, if a change is needed
- Someone who can change the settings in your admin
- A company-controlled secure handoff agreed before access: no live passwords, keys, private code or customer records by ordinary email.
You keep the live store, admin logins and customer data. We never log in; you run the tests and apply the settings, and we interpret what you send.
