Job shopify-discount-code-not-applying-as-intended · revised 11 October 2026

Make a Shopify discount code apply exactly as you intended

Each shopping basket on your list gets the discount, or the refusal, you specify on a test store, with the exact settings written down for you to apply.

You might be seeing

  • Customers see "Discount couldn't be used with your existing discounts"
  • A code works for you but not for some customers
  • Two promotions stack when only one should apply
  • A code works once, then never again for the same customer

No passwords, keys, card details or admin invites needed to start.

What usually happened

Shopify discounts never combine unless both discounts allow it, each discount belongs to a class (product, order or shipping), and a code is also limited by who may use it, which products it covers, how many times it can be used and when it is active. A promotion that looks right in the admin can still be refused or stack wrongly because two of these rules disagree, and the customer only sees a generic message.

Who it’s for: Owner of a Shopify store running a discount code or automatic discount that refuses to apply, stacks when it should not, or gives the wrong amount.

Usually starts when: A promotion launched or a second discount was added, and customers report "code not valid", a missing discount, or a discount that is bigger than planned.

The result: On a test store, every basket on your agreed list produces the discount lines and total you specify, or the refusal you intended, and the settings behind each result are written down.

What goes wrong?
What kind of discount is it?
Do you know what should happen when two promotions meet?
Can you create a test store with a few sample products?

Checks you can run yourself

  1. Read the combination settings

Open each discount in the admin and look at which classes it can combine with.

Look for: A discount that does not allow the class of the other discount, or only one of the two allowing it.

  2. Read the eligibility and limits

On the same page, read customer eligibility, products or collections, usage limits and start and end times.

Look for: A limit that applies per customer, a product list that leaves the item out, or a start time earlier or later than you assumed.

What you get

  • The basket matrix with the expected result, the result found before, and the result after the change
  • The corrected settings for each discount, listed field by field
  • A note naming the rule behind each wrong result
  • Steps to apply the settings in your live store and to put the old ones back

Included

  • The discounts you name: their type, method, class, eligibility, usage limits, dates and combination settings
  • A basket matrix you agree: products, customer type, shipping country and codes entered
  • Finding which rule causes each wrong result and what to change
  • Re-testing every basket on a test store with the corrected settings

Not included

  • Deciding the promotion, its depth or its terms
  • Discounts created by a third-party app that does not support combinations
  • Custom discount logic that needs code in the checkout
  • Gift cards, store credit and post-purchase offers
  • Marketing consent, legal wording or tax rules for promotions

How we know it’s done

Agreed with you before work starts. Each check produces evidence you keep.

  1. Each basket on the agreed list reaches the expected discount lines and total at checkout on the test store

Evidence: The matrix with a checkout screenshot for each row

  2. A basket that should be refused shows the refusal message and the full price

Evidence: Screenshot of the message and total

  3. A per-customer limit behaves as agreed for a first and a second use by the same test customer

    Evidence: Two checkout screenshots

  4. The written settings, applied to a fresh test store, reproduce the same totals

Evidence: A second run of three rows from the matrix

Sign-off. You review the matrix and the test-store results and sign off before payment. Changing live discounts is a separate step you take.

If it fails. If the checks do not pass, you do not pay, and we hand over what we found so anyone can continue.

When it fits, and when we stop

It fits when

  • You can name the discounts involved and say what each should do for a given basket
  • You, or someone you authorise, can create a test store with sample products and recreate the discounts there from our settings
  • The discounts are Shopify discount codes or automatic discounts, not an app rule
  • Someone you authorise can edit discounts in the live store

We stop and tell you if

  • The promotion is an app discount and the app does not support combining with others
  • The result you want needs custom checkout code rather than settings
  • You have not decided what should happen for conflicting promotions
  • The checkout is an external one where combinations are not supported

What could go wrong

The handover lists each discount setting as it was and as it should be, so you can put the old values back. We do not change the live store, and Shopify does not let a discount type or method be edited after creation, so the handover says where a discount must be recreated.

Scroll the table sideways to read it all.

RiskHow we handle it
Customers use the code while it is being correctedThe handover says when to apply the change and to export or note current discount settings first.
A discount worth 0 or zero percent causes odd behaviourWe set the smallest valid value where a placeholder is needed and note it in the handover.
The test store differs from live in markets or customersWe recreate the markets and customer cases the baskets need, and say plainly where the test store cannot reproduce them.

A second reviewer checks every basket result against the expected total and that the written settings reproduce the same result on a fresh test store.

How we deliver

We arrange the work and independent review, then show you the result against the agreed checks. You keep authority over your systems.

  • Write down the agreed basket matrix and the expected result for every row
  • Recreate the discounts on your test store from the screenshots, and run each basket to the checkout total
  • Find the rule that explains each wrong result: combination class, eligibility, limit, date or message
  • Change the settings on the test store and record each change
  • Re-run every basket, including baskets that already worked
  • Independent review, then hand over the matrix, settings and steps to undo; you apply them live

This is a one-off job, not emergency cover or a subscription. We confirm eligibility, the total price, a start window and a delivery date before you accept. Work starts only after agreed inputs, secure access, any licences and necessary permissions are in place. Platform, app and supplier charges are excluded unless the written quote includes them. No charge or booking is created by an enquiry.

Need to keep it working?

Discuss a basket-matrix check before future promotions as a separate agreement.

Ongoing work is separately scoped and quoted: no monitoring, response-time guarantee or automatic subscription is included in this job.

Explore an ongoing engineering lane, or mention the responsibility you need in your enquiry.

What you can check

This is a new service. We have not delivered this job for a client yet.

Other ways to get this done

  • Shopify documents how discounts combine and which messages mean what. If one discount is the problem, reading its combination settings first may be enough.
  • A discount app vendor may be able to fix their own app rule faster than anyone else.

Questions

Do you need access to my live store?

No. We work from screenshots and a test store you own. You apply the settings in the live store.

Why did my discounts stop combining?

Discounts combine only when both allow it, and Shopify lists different rules by class and plan. The matrix shows which rule applied in each basket.

Can you design the promotion for me?

No. You decide the promotion; we make the settings produce it and prove it with the matrix.

Send an enquiry

Send us

  • The discount names and types, and what each should do
  • Three baskets that give a wrong result: items, who is buying, country and codes entered
  • The message shown to the customer, if any
  • Whether the discounts were edited after creation, and when they start and end
  • Whether any discount app is installed

Later, once you agree

  • Screenshots of each discount settings page, with customer names and emails removed
  • A test store you create and own, with sample products matching the baskets
  • A named person who confirms the expected result for each basket
  • A company-controlled secure handoff agreed before access: no live passwords, keys, private code or customer records by ordinary email.

You keep the live store, its admin logins and customer data. We work from screenshots and your test store, and you make any change to live discounts yourself.

A public HTTPS link only, without login details, query strings or fragments. No code or logs.
