Turn a WooCommerce or Magento product export into a Shopify-ready import file
Your product export becomes a Shopify product file and a matching redirect file, proved by an import on a test store with counts and sampled values matching the source.
You might be seeing
- Shopify's import preview shows errors or skips rows
- Variable products arrive as many separate products
- Options, sizes or colours are missing after import
- Images do not import or land on the wrong product
No passwords, keys, card details or admin invites needed to start.
What usually happened
WooCommerce and Magento export products in their own row layouts, with parent and variation rows, attributes in their own columns and variation links held in a single field. Shopify expects one product per handle, variants as repeated rows with at most three options, its own header names, and images one per row. A direct upload fails or loses structure, and the products must be reshaped by rule, with decisions where the two models disagree.
Who it’s for: Owner of a WooCommerce or Magento store moving the product catalogue to Shopify with nobody technical to reshape the export.
Usually starts when: You have decided to move platforms, have a product export in hand, and Shopify rejects it or imports it with options, variants or images in the wrong place.
The result: A Shopify product file and a redirect file for the agreed catalogue import on a test store with the same product and variant counts as the source, and sampled products matching in options, SKUs, prices and images.
Check whether this job fits
Five questions, about two minutes. Your answers stay on this page unless you choose to email them.
Checks you can run yourself
Count what you have
Open the export in a spreadsheet and count the parent rows and the variation rows separately.
Look for: The number of products and variants Shopify should end up with.
List your option names
Write down every attribute used for variations, across all products.
Look for: Any product using more than three, which will need a decision.
What you get
- The Shopify product file, and the redirect file for the agreed old addresses
- A mapping sheet: source column, Shopify column, rule, and any decision you made
- A comparison report: product count, variant count, sampled products side by side, image results
- A list of products that did not fit cleanly, with the reason and the choice taken
- Live import steps, including the order of imports and how to undo them
Included
- One product export from WooCommerce or Adobe Commerce and Magento 2, for up to 300 products
- A written mapping from the source columns to Shopify columns, including the decisions where the platforms differ
- A Shopify product file in UTF-8 with the exact headers, and a redirect file from the old product addresses to the new product addresses
- An import on a test store, a comparison with the source, and a short guide to the live import
Not included
- Customers, historic orders, reviews, gift cards and coupon codes
- Theme design, apps, checkout setup and payment setup
- Moving the domain, or promising any search ranking result
- Products that need more than three options unless you decide how to merge or split them
- Exports from other platforms, which are quoted after we see the file headers
How we know it’s done
Agreed with you before work starts. Each check produces evidence you keep.
The test store shows the same number of products and variants as the source export, apart from items you chose to exclude
Evidence: Counts from the source, the file and a fresh test-store export
Twenty sampled products, including every product with options, match the source in title, options, SKU, price and image count
Evidence: A side-by-side table for each sampled product
The import on the test store reports no row errors, and every image on the sample imports
Evidence: The import result and a screenshot of the sampled product pages
Every redirect target in the redirect file is the handle of a product that exists on the test store
Evidence: The redirect list checked against the test-store product handles
Sign-off. You review the comparison and sign off before payment. The live import, redirects and domain change are separate steps you take.
If it fails. If the checks do not pass, you do not pay, and we hand over what we found so anyone can continue.
When it fits, and when we stop
It fits when
- You can send a product export in CSV from the store you are leaving, with no customer data
- Product images are available at public addresses that stay online until the import has run
- You can create a test Shopify store and run an import there
- You or an authorised person can make the live import and set up redirects when ready
We stop and tell you if
- More than about 300 products, which is quoted as a larger migration
- Most products need more than three options and nobody can decide how to merge or split them
- The export has no product codes and cannot be matched to anything
- The source store has custom product types that need custom fields we cannot map without your decision
What could go wrong
Nothing changes on the store you are leaving, and the test store is deleted when you finish. The live steps say to export Shopify products before importing, so the import can be undone with that export.
Scroll the table sideways to read it all.
| Risk | How we handle it |
|---|---|
| Variation links in the export are mis-parsed, so variants attach to the wrong product | We check every variant row against its parent by code and compare counts with the source. |
| A value containing a comma or quote breaks a row | The file is UTF-8, quoted as Shopify expects, and every row is tested in the test-store import. |
| Old addresses are redirected to the wrong products | Each redirect target is checked against a product handle that exists on the test store, and you review the list. |
| Customers or orders appear in an export file | We ask for product columns only and delete files after sign-off. |
A second reviewer compares a sample of products across the source export, the file and the test-store export, and checks that no customer data is in any file.
How we deliver
We arrange the work and independent review, then show you the result against the agreed checks. You keep authority over your systems.
- Read the export, count products and variants and list every attribute used for variations
- Write the mapping from source columns to Shopify columns and agree the decisions where the models differ
- Build the product file with one product per handle and variants as repeated rows, and the redirect file for the agreed addresses
- Import on your test store, then re-export and compare counts and sampled products with the source
- Fix any rows that failed, and re-run until the comparison is clean
- Independent review, then hand over the files, comparison and live steps; you run the live import
This is a one-off job, not emergency cover or a subscription. We confirm eligibility, the total price, a start window and a delivery date before you accept. Work starts only after agreed inputs, secure access, any licences and necessary permissions are in place. Platform, app and supplier charges are excluded unless the written quote includes them. No charge or booking is created by an enquiry.
Need to keep it working?
Discuss customers, historic orders and theme work as separate agreements.
Ongoing work is separately scoped and quoted: no monitoring, response-time guarantee or automatic subscription is included in this job.
Explore an ongoing engineering lane, or mention the responsibility you need in your enquiry.
What you can check
This is a new service. We have not delivered this job for a client yet.
Other ways to get this done
- Shopify describes migration options, including CSV import and a migration app. For a small, simple catalogue an app may move the products without a custom file.
- A Shopify Partner can run the whole migration, including themes and apps, which this job does not cover.
Questions
Will my search ranking survive the move?
We do not promise any ranking result. We provide a redirect file so old product addresses reach the matching new ones, and you check the most visited ones after launch.
Can you move my customers and orders?
No. This job covers products only. Shopify handles customers and historic orders by different routes.
What if a product has four options?
Shopify allows three, so you choose between merging two options or splitting the product. We list each case for you to decide.
Send an enquiry
Send us
- Which platform you are leaving, and its version if known
- About how many products and variants, and how many use options
- The first ten rows of the export, with prices and customer data removed if any
- Whether product addresses on the old store should redirect to the same products on Shopify
- Any product that already needs more than three options
Later, once you agree
- The full product export, sent by the agreed secure route
- A list of old product addresses if they are not in the export
- A test Shopify store you create and own, and your decisions on any product that does not fit
- A company-controlled secure handoff agreed before access: no live passwords, keys, private code or customer records by ordinary email.
You keep both stores and all logins. We work from the export files and your test store, and you run the live import and the redirect import under your own account.
