Squarespace form submissions missing: storage options, one email address and what each limit does

A Squarespace form block saves submissions to the storage you choose and emails one address. Most missing submissions trace to a storage setting, an old address or a connection limit.

Storage first, email second

On Squarespace a form block does not simply send an email. Each form needs at least one storage option, and without one visitors cannot submit it. The options are the Contacts panel, a Squarespace mailing list, a CSV download, an email address, a Google Drive spreadsheet, Mailchimp or Zapier, and not every option works with every form type.

The email option is the simplest to get wrong. The default address is the account email of the owner or contributor who added the block, only one address can be set per form, and the address is not updated if you later change your own email or buy Google Workspace. Notifications keep going to the old address until someone edits the block's email notification setting.

  • Open the form block and read its storage list before anything else.
  • Check the email notification address against the one you read daily.
  • Note which other storage options are connected, since they can fail independently.

Why a submission seems to vanish

Squarespace turns off form submission emails on trial sites, to prevent abuse, so a form on a trial site shows a thank-you message and sends nothing. A paid plan fixes that; in the meantime Google Drive or Mailchimp can hold submissions.

Each connected service has its own limit. A Google Drive account can connect up to 50 forms; connecting another disconnects the oldest. Renaming the spreadsheet breaks the connection, and a renamed form field comes through blank because column headings must match field titles. Letters outside the Latin alphabet in a form field title, as in Chinese, Cyrillic or Arabic, are omitted from the connected Google Drive spreadsheet, where English placeholder names appear as the column headings. Mailchimp will not connect to forms with more than 30 fields, and forms that share one audience must be identical or submissions can be dropped. The Contacts panel needs a required email field and does not show submitters from before 21 July 2023.

  • Use a new address when testing Mailchimp, since existing addresses get no new opt-in email.
  • Check the spreadsheet name and headings after any edit to the form.
  • Count how many forms use the same Google account.

Error messages and the safe response

Squarespace documents the messages visitors and owners see. An error that names X of Y storage services means some storage connections are failing: disconnect and reconnect each, and if that fails remove and re-add the block. An unknown error shortly after several submissions is a spam safeguard, so the visitor can try again later.

The Unknown authorization header message from Google Drive has a heavier remedy: disconnect Drive in the block, remove Squarespace under the Google account's connected apps, then reconnect. That action disconnects every Squarespace form tied to that Google account, so list them first and reconnect each.

  • Write down every form that uses the affected Google account before disconnecting.
  • Send a labelled test after each reconnection, not only at the end.

Spam folders, what does not fit, and acceptance

Squarespace says notification emails may be in spam or junk and suggests adding form-submission@squarespace.info to an accept rule at your mail provider. A form from a third-party service, a custom-coded form, or a domain with failing mail authentication each needs a different fix.

The fixed-scope repair of one form is priced at £145 as an untested proposal and paid only after you sign off. It is accepted when a labelled test from the published page is stored in the chosen storage and reaches the named address, with the settings changed listed with their old values. No one can guarantee inbox placement at a provider they do not control.

Sources and limits

  • Squarespace: set up form and newsletter storage Checked 2026-10-11.
    • Each form needs at least one storage option, and a form emails one address that does not update automatically when the account email changes.
    • Form submission emails are off on trial sites, Google Drive connects up to 50 forms per account, and forms with more than 30 fields cannot connect to Mailchimp.
  • Squarespace: troubleshooting form issues Checked 2026-10-11.
    • Submissions may go to spam, and form-submission@squarespace.info should be allowed.
    • The error messages for storage connections and the Google Drive authorization header have specific disconnect and reconnect steps.
    • Form field titles with letters outside the Latin alphabet lose those letters in the connected Google Drive spreadsheet, which shows generalised English placeholder column headings; the limitation applies to field titles, not to what visitors type.
