Build the map before opening any tool
Google's site-move guidance starts with a list: collect old addresses from sitemaps, analytics, the content system and Search Console, and pair each with its new counterpart. Squarespace gives the same advice in its own words, with a spreadsheet column for whether a redirect is needed and another for the new address. Where possible, keep the same slug so that fewer redirects are needed at all.
Decide up front which addresses have no counterpart. Google advises against sending many old addresses to an unrelated page such as the home page, because it may be treated as a not-found result; those addresses should return a real not-found page, ideally a helpful one.
- One row per old address, with the new address or the word gone.
- Mark image and file addresses separately; they may need another route.
- Keep the sheet; it becomes the test list.
What each builder's tool accepts
Webflow keeps redirects in site settings and needs a paid plan. Its CSV import replaces all existing redirects, so export the current list, add your rows and import the merged file. Redirects run in the order they were added, so specific rules come before wildcards, and they apply only after a full-site publish; publishing a single page does not include them. Webflow recommends keeping the total to about 1,000.
Squarespace's URL mappings field holds 400 KB, about 2,500 lines, evaluated from the top. A redirect applies only if the page it redirects from is deleted or disabled, and you cannot redirect image or file addresses or the home page. Most redirects cannot use the characters ?, & or #, and a bracketed name variable lets one line cover a whole blog or store collection.
Wix's URL Redirect Manager accepts a CSV of up to 500 redirects per file with two columns, old address and new address. Rules that already exist are overwritten only if you switch that on, a new redirect takes a few minutes to start working, and the site needs a connected domain.
- Export existing redirects before any bulk change.
- Read the builder's own error messages; Squarespace names three for malformed lines.
- Split a Wix list into files of no more than 500.
Titles and descriptions travel separately
A redirect moves the visitor and the link, not the page's title or description. Those live in each builder's page settings, so they must be copied row by row. Webflow's migration guidance asks you to record meta titles, descriptions, Open Graph tags and canonical tags before the move. Keep the old text unless you have chosen better, and record any change in the sheet.
Check also that the new page's own canonical and internal links point to the new addresses, not the old ones, so the redirects are not the only route in.
- Add title and description columns to the same sheet.
- Compare them after loading, not before.
- Fix internal links so they do not rely on redirects.
Test every address, then what does not fit
Testing means requesting every old address and recording the status, the final address and the number of hops, then checking the not-found rows return the page you approved. Google says its crawler follows up to ten hops but advises direct redirects, and a chain of three at most. Leave redirects in place for at least a year.
A redirect map cannot promise rankings; Google says rankings can fluctuate for weeks after a move, and a Change of Address in Search Console is for a domain change only and is the property owner's action. The fixed-scope job is priced at £295 for up to 60 addresses as an untested proposal and paid only after you sign off. It is accepted when every mapped address the builder can redirect redirects once to its mapped page, none loops, gone rows return the approved not-found page, the addresses the builder cannot redirect are on a list you approved with the reason for each, and titles and descriptions match the sheet.
