A collection page is one template
When you create a collection in Webflow, the Designer creates a blank collection page for it. That page is a dynamic template: one layout produces a separate page for every item in the collection, and changing the template changes all of them. Elements you add stay static until you connect them to a collection field, and anything left static appears identically on every item's page.
That explains the common half-built result. Someone creates the collection and fills it, but nobody designs the template or connects its elements, so the pages exist but show nothing useful, or every page shows the same placeholder. To change one item only, edit its dynamic content; to show or hide something for some items, Webflow points to conditional visibility.
- Open the template and look for elements with purple outlines: those are connected to fields.
- Static elements have blue outlines and will repeat on every page.
- Use conditional visibility for a piece that only some items have.
The address is fixed by two settings
Each collection has a Name field and a Slug field, both required. The slug makes the item's address. A separate collection URL setting names the folder that holds the collection's pages; with a collection URL of post, an item's address would be your domain, then post, then the item slug. Webflow converts non-Latin characters in slugs to Latin ones, removes special characters and lowercases everything.
Decide the collection URL before publishing. If you rename it afterwards, existing external links break unless you add 301 redirects, and Webflow suggests a single wildcard redirect from the old folder to the new. On a site with Ecommerce enabled, the product and category folders are reserved and a collection cannot use them.
- Choose the collection URL once and write it down.
- Keep slugs short and unique within the collection.
- Check that a static folder does not share the collection's address.
Limits that shape the design
A collection list on a page shows at most 100 items unless pagination is enabled, and a page can hold up to 40 collection lists, of which up to 10 may be nested. Reference fields, which link one collection to another, are limited per collection; Webflow's July 2024 plan update set that limit at 10 on the Starter and CMS plans. If your list may pass 100 items, the design needs pagination or a different approach before you build it.
Plan limits change. Webflow's May 2026 update combined the CMS and Business Site plans into one Premium plan: new purchases from 13 May 2026, most existing sites from 29 June 2026 (later for sites in Freelancer or Agency Workspaces or on older legacy pricing). Webflow's FAQ says a CMS-plan site goes from 2,000 to 20,000 CMS items and from 20 to 40 collections, and a Business-plan site from 10,000 to 20,000 items. Before that, Webflow's July 2024 update set 60 fields and 10 references per collection on the Starter and CMS plans bought or changed from 15 July 2024. Your own site settings, under Plans, list the limits that apply to you today, and they are the ones to design against.
- Read your plan's limits from your own site settings before designing.
- Count the items you expect in a year.
- Do not design around a limit you have not read on your own plan.
SEO fields, what a collection cannot do, and acceptance
The template page's settings can use dynamic values for the SEO title and description and for the sharing title and description, so each item can get its own. Without this, every item page shares the same title, a common and avoidable fault.
A collection gives every item the same layout, so items needing unique layouts stay as separate pages. Webflow's own user accounts feature, which once gated items for members, was shut down on 29 January 2026, so members-only items need another tool. The fixed-scope build of one collection is priced at £495 as an untested proposal and paid only after you sign off. It is accepted when a test item appears at its agreed address and once in the list, an item with an empty field shows no blank box, and two items show different titles and descriptions.
