Job store-pricing-rules-tested-on-past-sales · revised 12 October 2026
Try a pricing rule on last year's sales before you switch anything on
A written pricing rule, such as marking down slow movers, replayed on 12 months of your orders to show what it would have done, never below your floor. It does not predict revenue.
You might be seeing
- You are not sure whether a markdown rule would have helped or hurt last year
- You want to test a rule without changing live prices
No passwords, keys, card details or admin invites needed to start.
What usually happened
A pricing rule looks sensible until you replay it on real sales. It may mark down a seasonal item too early, trigger on stock-out days, or push a price below cost. A replay shows what the rule would have done, but cannot show how customers would have reacted to different prices.
Who it’s for: Owner of a store thinking about markdown or pricing rules who wants to see them replayed before they touch live prices.
Usually starts when: You are considering a rule such as "mark down a slow mover after eight weeks" and want to know what it would have done to last year.
The result: A written rule you choose is replayed on 12 months of your order lines. You get a reproducible report of every price the rule would have set, none below your floor, and a plain line that it does not predict revenue or customer response.

How we know it’s done
Agreed with you before work starts. Each check produces evidence you keep.
Running the script twice on the same export gives identical reports.
Evidence: Both reports compared.
No replayed price in the report is below the floor you supplied; one below the floor fails the whole test.
Evidence: A script check of every row.
Your reviewer recomputes 10 replayed prices by hand and each matches the report.
Evidence: The recomputation beside the report.
The first lines of the report state that it replays past orders and does not predict revenue or customer response.
Evidence: The first page of the report.
Sign-off. You re-run the acceptance checks with the steps we hand over, read the results and sign off in writing. Payment follows sign-off.
If it fails. If an agreed check fails, you do not pay for this fixed scope. We hand over what we found and agree whether to stop or re-quote; no surprise work.
When it fits, and when we stop
It fits when
- You can export 12 months of order lines and stock by week without customer data
- You supply a floor for each SKU, or ask for the floor job first
- The rule uses only your own sales and stock
- A named person reads the report
We stop and tell you if
- The rule keys off named competitors' prices
- You want a forecast of revenue
- Order history is under six months, or has long stock-out gaps you cannot mark
- You want the rule switched on for you
What could go wrong
The job works on copies of files you send and returns files and a report. Nothing in your store or helpdesk is changed by us, so there is nothing to undo. Our copies of your files are deleted when the job ends.
Scroll the table sideways to read it all.
| Risk | How we handle it |
|---|---|
| The replay is read as a forecast. | The first lines of the report say it replays past orders at the rule's prices and does not predict customer response. |
| Stock-out weeks look like low demand and mislead the rule. | Stock-out weeks are marked and excluded from the slow-mover test. |
| A rule that varies prices by customer is built. | Rules use product and week only. Personalised pricing is outside this job. |
A separate automated reviewer checks the work and the test results before hand-over. Your named person reads the report and decides whether to use any rule. No human supervisor from us is included unless your agreement names one, and at launch the work is largely automated.
How we deliver
We arrange the work and independent review, then show you the result against the agreed checks. You keep authority over your systems.
- Agree the rule, the floors and the replay weeks
- Receive 12 months of order lines and weekly stock
- Mark stock-out weeks so they are not read as low demand
- Replay the rule per SKU and week; check every price against the floor
- Your reviewer recomputes 10 replayed prices; a separate automated reviewer checks the rest
- Hand over the report, script and limits statement
This is a one-off job, not emergency cover or a subscription. We confirm eligibility, price, start window and delivery date in writing before you accept, and work starts only after the agreed inputs are in place. An enquiry creates no charge or booking.
Need to keep it working?
Discuss testing a second rule, or a price-change proposal list within your floors.
Ongoing work is separately scoped and quoted: no monitoring, response-time guarantee or automatic subscription is included in this job.
Mention the responsibility you need in your enquiry.
What you can check
This is a new service. We have not delivered this job for a client yet.
Other ways to get this done
- Try the rule by hand on a spreadsheet for your ten slowest products.
- Run the rule on a small set of products live for a few weeks, with your floor in place.
Questions
Will it tell me what profit I would make?
No. It shows what the rule would have done on past orders. Customers might have behaved differently.
Can you switch the rule on?
No. You decide, and you change prices in your own store.
Does it use my competitors' prices?
No. It uses only your own sales, stock and floors.
Does a pass mean it will be right next month?
No. A pass describes items like the test sample on the day of the test. It is not a promise about future items, and it does not replace your own checking.
Send an enquiry
Send us
- The rule in one or two sentences
- How many SKUs and how much history you have
- Whether you already have floors
- No customer data or store login
Later, once you agree
- Order lines and weekly stock through an agreed secure route
- Floors per SKU
- The names of stock-out weeks you know about
- The person who reads the report
You keep your store, your helpdesk and every login. We work on the files you send through a secure route agreed after you say yes, and hand back files and a report. We never ask for store or helpdesk logins, and nothing goes live until your named person applies it.
